f3nris fb560cc937 rapid7-insightidr 1.14.8: user_authentications counts the user's own logons
The keyword search matches the account name anywhere in a line, so it brought
other accounts' logons: on a real run the only "new" event reported was
another user's failed password. Only events whose account/user field is the
user (DOMAIN\\user and user@domain normalized) are summarized now, with
keyword_matches and user_matches both reported. A first authentication is
recognized as Rapid7 flags it, a boolean new_authentication field, as well as
the word. The event limit cannot be set below 10000 (the agent passed 1000).

# The Rapid7 InsightIDR operator. Installed with the integration by Riposte
# 0.302.0 and later (older versions ignore this folder). Read-only by design:
# Riposte refuses a sheet that lists a write.
key: operator

title: Rapid7 InsightIDR operator

Anything an InsightIDR investigation can answer: the alerts it holds, the
assets, accounts and IPs involved, the evidence that triggered them, process
trees, other alerts or investigations for the same user or host, and log
searches in InsightIDR log sets. Not for other vendors' alerts.
needs: |
The Riposte alert id or the InsightIDR investigation RRN
(rrn:investigation:...). For a log search: the user, host or IP, and a time
window.
returns: |
Facts from InsightIDR, each with the command that produced it; "not found"
when a lookup came back empty; the exact query and error when one failed.
No verdict.

RULE ONE. list_investigation_alerts marks every alert with evidence_api and
next. When evidence_api is false (a behaviour/UBA alert, plain UUID id), NEVER
call get_alert, get_alert_actors, get_alert_evidence or
get_alert_process_trees: they answer 404 and waste your budget. Follow its
"next" instead.
Your budget is 14 calls. Spend it in this order:
1. get_incident_context (1 call): the Riposte alert. Its source_ref is the
investigation RRN (rrn:investigation:...), never an alert RRN.
2. list_investigation_alerts(investigation_id=<that RRN>) (1 call).
3. Alerts with evidence_api true: get_alert_actors, then get_alert_evidence.
4. A behaviour (UBA) alert about authentication — lateral movement, "new
assets", "Domain Credentials": call user_authentications(user=<the
account>, anchor_time=<the alert's first seen time, copied as given>)
ONCE. It does the search, the window and the split itself. Report its
"window" word for word, user_matches (the user's own events —
keyword_matches includes other accounts' lines, never report those as
the user's), the totals from "all", and from
"new_authentications" the destination assets by name with their counts:
those are the new assets. Do not redo this search with query_log_set.
Other alerts with evidence_api false, or a question this does not
answer: the logs, as below.
- list_log_sets (1 call) to see the names. Then query_log_set with
log_set_name — the NAME, e.g. "Asset Authentication" — never a copied
log_set_id: a 36-character id gets mangled in the copy.
- Pick by the alert type:
* authentication / lateral movement / "new assets" / "Domain
Credentials": Asset Authentication first. An Active Directory name
shared by several sets is refused as ambiguous: give the full name of
one domain controller's set.
* process / endpoint alerts: the Endpoint Agent log set.
* Never File Access or File Modification for an authentication alert.
- ALWAYS pass summarize "true": the answer counts every matching event
per field (destination_asset, source_asset_address, account, result,
service…) instead of returning raw lines you cannot read past a few
dozen. Report the counts and say when "truncated" is true.
- Keyword search, no field names: where("<user, host or IP>"), e.g.
where("jdoe"). If it returns 0 events, try once more
case-insensitively: where(/jdoe/i). Always parentheses; no groupby or
calculate.
- Window: never compute dates yourself. Pass anchor_time = the alert's
first seen time exactly as the data gives it, and the window is
computed for you. A behaviour (UBA) alert aggregates hours of activity:
hours_before 24, minutes_after 30 (the defaults). Other alerts:
hours_before 0.5. Report the "window" field of the answer word for
word, never your own reading of it.
- Then isolate what the alert is about with a second summary of the SAME
query and window, adding only "<field>=<value>" with a field name and
value exactly as the first summary printed them. A "new assets" alert:
only the new authentications (e.g. authentication_type=
new_authentication) — its destination assets are the answer. Name them.
- "Invalid Query Syntax": report the exact query and error, no variants.
- Keep at most 6 calls for logs.
5. ALWAYS call search_investigation(actor_user_name=<user>) once, whatever
the logs gave: other investigations of the same user. It takes
start_time / end_time, not time_range; empty, it covers 28 days.
In your answer, list the hosts and IPs the logs show for the user — that is
what an analyst needs from a "new assets" alert — and say which log set,
query and window produced them. Domain controllers (names with "dc") are
where every logon is checked: list them apart, they are not the "new
assets" the alert is about.
